The concept of function is a fundamental content of mathematics education. Since the Meran reforms of 1905 around Felix Klein, the catchphrase "Education for Functional Thinking" in particular has stood for a widespread dissemination of the concept with all its facets throughout mathematics education. The aim is to provide learners with a comprehensive picture of functions and their internal and external mathematical applications in the entire range of mathematics topics and beyond. Learners should learn to think in functions, i.e. develop functional thinking (Vollrath 1989). Especially in recent years, there have been an increasing number of research projects that focus on the notion of "functional thinking" or corresponding learning processes for functional thinking (e.g., Nitsch 2015; Klinger 2018; Lichti 2019; Zindel 2019).
