Nach dem Studium der Architektur an der FH Münster (Dipl. Ing.) und TU Berlin (Dr.-Ing.) sowie Berufstätigkeit, zeitweise in den USA, Studium der Kunstgeschichte, Soziologie und Philosophie an den Universitäten in Bonn, Münster und Berlin mit längeren Aufenthalten in Italien, vorwiegend Rom; Magister Artium an der FU Berlin, Dr. phil. an der TU Berlin. Anschließend, finanziert durch die Paul Getty-Stiftung (USA), als Mitarbeiter des Germanischen Nationalmuseums in Nürnberg mit Bearbeitung und Publikation des Bestandskataloges der Barockgemälde betraut. Danach als Hochschulassistent, später akademischer Rat, an der Universität Augsburg und Habilitation in Kunstwissenschaften (2000) an der TU Berlin. Vertretungs- und Gastprofessuren in Kassel, Jena, Kiel, Marburg, Heidelberg, Graz und Trier. 2004 Ruf auf den Lehrstuhl für Kunstgeschichte der Universität Trier (Rheinland-Pfalz), Rufannahme 2005, Ende 2019 Ausscheiden aus dem Universitätsdienst.
November 2010 Verleihung des höchsten europäischen Wissenschaftspreises („ERC Advanced Grant“) durch den Europäischen Forschungsrat der Europäischen Union im Bereich „Social Sciences and Humanities“. Leitung der „Trierer Arbeitsstelle für Künstlersozialgeschichte / TAK“ (gegründet 2011), des „Kunsthistorischen Forums Irsee" (gegründet 2012), des DFG-Langfristprojektes (gegründet 2017) „Edition der Reise- und Sammlungsbeschreibungen Philipp Hainhofers“ und des „Hainhofer-Kolloquiums“ der Schwabenakademie Irsee (gegründet 2019).
