This article is the introduction to a special issue of the "European Journal of American Studies" on "Envisioning Justice: Mediating the Question of Rights in American Visual Culture." The special issue collects contributions that look at how the notoriously elusive concept of justice (and related ones such as law, rights etc.) are negotiated in American visual culture, ranging from photography and comics/graphic novels to TV series, films, and computer games.
