Kurzfassung

Below the shallow littoral zone, where surface waves and surf dominate mixing and transport, high-frequency internal waves are the most energetic hydrodynamic phenomena. Depending on stratification, these internal waves have periods between 8 and 20 minutes and amplitudes of up to 10 m. The waves interact with the sloping bottom within the littoral zone, which often leads to wave breaking and strong turbulent mixing. Depending on stratification, these internal waves have periods between 8 and 20 minutes and amplitudes of up to 10 m. The waves interact with the sloping bottom within the littoral zone, which often leads to wave breaking and strong turbulent mixing. We will estimate wave properties and their relation to stratification and external forcing parameters along the sloping boundaries of Lake Constance. The main focus of the proposed research will be on turbulence and mixing associated with the shoaling of such waves and the ecological impacts of internal wave breaking.» weiterlesen» einklappen
