Most inner-city green spaces and private gardens are fertilized and mowed too often. These homogeneous lawns are botanically poor in species and offer animals, especially arthropods, little food or retreat. However, also small but structurally rich areas in particular can make a valuable contribution to nature conservation in the urban area. In general, with increasing intensification of agriculture, human settlements become more important for the conservation of biodiversity. The Initiative ‘Bunte Wiese’ is a joint project by students and teachers from the Institute for Environmental Sciences (iES), Landau, to promote biodiversity in public green spaces. We are committed to ensuring that public green spaces are only mowed once or twice a year. The project is accompanied by scientific studies at the iES and public relations.
