This paper deals with the cognitive foundations of meaning in language, thought and interaction. It adopts the perspective of Cognitive Linguistics, which sees language as based on general cognitive mechanisms. In Cognitive Linguistics, linguistic utterances are seen as prompts for the mental construction of conceptualizations from a certain perspective. It adopts the perspective of Cognitive Linguistics, which sees language as based on general cognitive mechanisms. In Cognitive Linguistics, linguistic utterances are seen as prompts for the mental construction of conceptualizations from a certain perspective. These conceptualizations are based on embodied mental simulations, which activate neuronal structures involved in perception and action for the purpose of understanding. The capacity to use and acquire language as a way of expressing and evoking mental simulations and perspectives rests on a number of general cognitive and sociocognitive capacities. This paper focuses on a number of these foundational capacities. Regarding the general cognitive capacities that underlie language, this paper deals with categorization and pattern-recognition. Among the sociocognitive foundations of linguistic interaction are capacities for perspective-taking, sharing and directing attention, the ability to use shared background knowledge in interaction and the ability to attribute mental states to others (Theory of Mind). Overall, language is a perspectival system of communication that builds on a rich platform of general cognitive and sociocognitive capacities and has deep evolutionary roots.» weiterlesen» einklappen
