Molecular and cellular mechanisms of neural homeostasis (TP A01 in CRC 1080) (DFG)

Laufzeit: 01.01.2013 - 31.12.2016

Kurzfassung

The survival of cells and naturally occurring apoptosis represent central processes in the developing brain. In the cerebral cortex, developmental apoptosis affects neuron from all cortical layers. However two neuronal populations are specifically affected during early corticogenesis : Cajal-Retzius neurons (CRN) in the marginal zone/layer I and subplate-neurons (SPN) in the deepest cortical layer.

In this project, we will investigate the molecular mechanisms which contribute to the activity-dependent survival and death of developing neocortical neurons, in particular of CRN and SPN.
Our main interest concerns the question how physiologically relevant neural activity pattern control survival and death of neurons. The working hypothesis that spontaneous and stimulus evoked activity pattern homeostatically control the size of neuronal populations in the developing cerebral cortex will be investigated.
