BMBF – International School - Joint Lab “Marine Bioproducts” - Global change and sustainable exploitation of marine resources (Joint German-Croatian Research Base Project; Internationales Büro HRV 09/001) (Coordinator: W.E.G. Müller)

Laufzeit: 01.01.2011 - 31.12.2012

Kurzfassung

Aquatic organisms, including lower invertebrates, in particular marine sponges, bryozoa and tunicates and (associated) microorganisms are extremely rich sources for novel bioactive (lead) compounds useful for human therapy. However, only very few of them have been tested in clinical trials. However, only very few of them have been tested in clinical trials. The goal of this Joint Research Base Project under German-Croatian leadership is to accelerate the development of new potential drugs and other therapeutically relevant products from these sources using a strategy that involves the knowledge in (functional) genomics of these organisms. This project focuses in particular on the target-oriented development of novel anti-cancer, anti-microbial, neuroprotective and immunomodulating compounds, but also includes potential and anti-parasitic compounds. The identification of bioactive compounds from sponges and the sustainable exploitation of these resources is also the main focus of the Center of Excellence BIOTECmarin. Since new techniques (introduced by BIOTECmarin) are now available a sustainable use of sponges becomes now feasible. This will strengthen the position of Germany and Croatia in bioproduct discovery and research dealing with sustainable exploitation of aquatic molecular biodiversity.» weiterlesen» einklappen
