Im/politeness is a fundamental feature of human language and communication. However, there is hardly any research on the evolution of im/politeness and the cognitive and social factors underlying its emergence. In this paper we argue that the evolution of politic, polite, as well as impolite behaviour is an important research question for language evolution research.
