The objective of the proposed research project (pict.1) is to investigate the structure of competence- and control beliefs (Core Self-Evaluations) in sub-Saharan Africa depending on cultural specificity. Compared to Western Europe, the sub-Saharan African context ascribes spiritual and social (interrelational) aspects a higher relevance to attitudes and actions.
Therefore, the composition of competence- and control beliefs should differ from those in Western Europe. But while these two cultures differ in how they perceive and organize their view of the world and the self, the overall functionality should be comparable, though.
Typical outcomes, that are linked to well-developed competence- and control beliefs (e.g. learning motivation, job performance, coping and well-being) should not be affected when assessed in a culturally fair manner. A theoretical basis for understanding the structure and functioning of competence- and control beliefs in sub-Saharan Africa is provided, to pave the
way for the development of culturally fair test instruments. Several application fields are concerned then, such as international personnel selection and development, training and education, as well as health prevention and treatment.
