The incidence of overweight and obesity has increased dramatically worldwide. Recent data indicate that there are more than 250 million obese people worldwide, representing about 7% of the adult population. This so-called obesity “epidemic” has prompted an increased research effort into potential treatments for this condition, with particular emphasis on the development of strategies to suppress appetite and thereby reduce energy intake. This so-called obesity “epidemic” has prompted an increased research effort into potential treatments for this condition, with particular emphasis on the development of strategies to suppress appetite and thereby reduce energy intake. Modulation of the physiological systems that regulate meal intake provides a logical approach to achieving this aim. DuoCure has developed a PEG introduced intragastric Balloon. Intragastric balloons are widely used in patients with morbid obesity. The balloon is designed to assist with weight loss in people who are at least 40% above their ideal weight and who have failed to obtain prolonged weight loss with other weight control programs.
