Influence of rehydration on the physico-chemical properties of a new resorbable 3D-collagen matrix

The goal of periodontal plastic surgery is to correct anatomical, developmental, traumatic or plaque disease-induced defects of the gingiva, alveolar mucosa, and bone (AAP 1996). In the context of these plastic-esthetic periodontal procedures the connective tissue graft (CTG) is the most predictable procedure and considered as the gold standard. Morbidity associated with harvesting the CTG, the limited supply of donor tissue, and the wish of the patient to avoid a second surgical site were...The goal of periodontal plastic surgery is to correct anatomical, developmental, traumatic or plaque disease-induced defects of the gingiva, alveolar mucosa, and bone (AAP 1996). In the context of these plastic-esthetic periodontal procedures the connective tissue graft (CTG) is the most predictable procedure and considered as the gold standard. Morbidity associated with harvesting the CTG, the limited supply of donor tissue, and the wish of the patient to avoid a second surgical site were reasons to look for an alternative to the autogenous connective tissue from the palate. A possible alternative could be the use of a porcine-derived collagen matrix. This 3D-collagen matrix (directly out of the package) was developed for soft tissue regeneration and serves as an extracellular matrix to allow rapid vascularization and tissue integration. A key-factor for success when using this new 3D-collagen matrix is the proper rehydration protocol. The objective of the present project is to investigate the influence of different rehydration periods on biomechanical and physico-chemical properties of a new 3D-collagen matrix. The knowledge of these parameters is of clinical relevance.
