The skin is a complex organ that not only protects physically from a potentially hostile exterior environment by its barrier function, but also translates immunologically relevant signals from the environment into local and systemic immune reactions. By harboring numerous highly motile immune cells as well as unique molecules, the skin serves as an orchestrator and adaptor organ for various immune functions.
