PD-1/PD-L1 plays an important role in the regulation of the immune response to cancer cells by suppressing T cell activity, so the detection of PD-L1-positive tumor cells means a weaker immune defense and a poorer prognosis. The PD-1/PD-L1 pathway is therefore a promising new target for immune therapy with antibodies like Pembrolizumab, which blocks the interaction between PD-1 and its ligands.
