The National Network for University Medicine (NUM) was founded in response to the COVID-19 pandemic to coordinate clinical research across university hospitals in Germany.

NUM-SAR complements the diagnostic and surveillance capacities of the Public Health Service (ÖGD) and provides timely, evidence-based information to support public health response and policy.

At the Institute of Virology of the University Medical Center Mainz, participation focuses on the Platform for Pathogen Competence (PAKOP), coordinated by Christian Drosten and Sandra Ciesek.
