Kurzfassung

Sponges are the most primitive multicellular organisms within the animal Kingdom. A wide variety of interesting, new compounds and classes of compounds has been isolated from marine sponges: cytotoxic compounds that may be used as anti-cancer drugs, antibiotics, anti-viral agents, compounds with anti-inflammatory and cardiovascular properties and compounds that can be used as anti-fouling agents.

Biotechnological production under well-defined conditions of sponge biomass is a necessary step towards commercialization of these potentially interesting products.
The goal of the research is to develop systems for the in vitro cultivation of marine sponges for the production of biological active compounds. Sponges will be grown as primmorphs in bioreactors. Primmorphs are strong spherical sponge aggregates made by reaggregation of primary cell cultures. Optimization of the growth of and isolation of bio-active components from these primmorphs is the main objective of the project. A process design (including the market analysis) will be made.
