This reflexive reaction has usually been conceptualized as direct and independent of situational influence. In this chapter, we highlight a different perspective that conceptualizes reactions to ostracism as fundamentally cognitively mediated. This perspective emphasizes the role of individuals’ subjective construal of the objective not-being-part situation. While many frames of interpretation may exist to guide subjective construal, we put the spotlight on social norms as one particularly important frame of interpretation in daily life. We argue that if exclusion is interpreted as a violation of a prevailing inclusion norm, individuals will experience pain and threat. In contrast, if exclusion is perceived as consistent with the salient norm, and if this norm is personally endorsed, the situation may not be interpreted as threatening in the first place.
