In a globalized world, where modern technologies and cross-cultural relations play an increasingly important role, translation seems to fulfil a double function within the receiving culture. On the one hand it generates greater diversity by introducing novel themes, ideas, knowledge etc. On the other hand, from a cross-cultural perspective, it fosters the development of intercultural dialogue and cultural unification processes. Drawing on modern sociological concepts, this paper aims to discuss two theses. Firstly, that an increase in translation traffic leads to the disappearance of unfamiliarity in texts and that this gives rise both to cultural diversification as well as to cultural fusion. Secondly, that the inner cultural diversification and specification in fact facilitates the processes of intercultural exchange and unification.
