BMBF-Projekt “MedPlantOS”: Development of a novel microemulsion-based delivery system for traditional medicinal plant products to increase bone-mineral density in people affected by HIV/osteoporosis

Laufzeit: 01.01.2022 - 31.12.2023

Kurzfassung

The aim of this project is the development of novel delivery systems for the release of model substances or extracts of indigenous plants used in traditional medicine in the sub-Saharan region for the prophylaxis and therapy of reduced bone density, as in osteoporotic bone diseases and HIV-associated pathologies. The delivery systems are to be used in food supplements and for the surface functionalization of bioactive silica scaffold structures.

The sub-project of the university medicine includes the research, development, production and physical-chemical characterization of innovative, biocompatible hybrid hydrogel nano/microparticles and spheres as novel delivery systems and their loading with the bioactive substances from indigenous plants from Namibia. The influence of the release of active substances from the delivery systems on the formation of the bone mineral hydroxyapatite and on the expression of marker genes of mineralization in an osteoblastic cell model of bone regeneration will be analyzed.
