#stayathome - Self-Compassion and Cognitive Reappraisal as strategies to mitigate parental stress during a global pandemic

Laufzeit: 01.01.2020 - 31.12.2020

Kurzfassung

To reduce the number of new infections and the reproduction rate of the corona virus, almost all countries worldwide including Germany and Austria took drastic measures in March and April 2020 with high impact on parents and families. For example, in both Germany and Austria schools were closed, work at home was promoted and curfews were imposed. Hence, families were forced to stay in a confined space for several weeks and still to this day (28th of April 2020), neither in Austria nor Germany...To reduce the number of new infections and the reproduction rate of the corona virus, almost all countries worldwide including Germany and Austria took drastic measures in March and April 2020 with high impact on parents and families. For example, in both Germany and Austria schools were closed, work at home was promoted and curfews were imposed. Hence, families were forced to stay in a confined space for several weeks and still to this day (28th of April 2020), neither in Austria nor Germany social life has returned to normal as schools for most students, child care services, sports clubs, and leisure activities like cinemas or playground remain closed. This situation is considered to be highly stressful for families and an increase of problematic family interactions, domestic violence and mental health problems for parents and children is possible. Therefore, we will investigate whether two potentially helpful strategies, self-compassion and cognitive reappraisal, can mitigate the perceived stress of parents during the pandemic compared to a wait-list control group over the course of one week. We expect that self-compassion is a better intervention in a global pandemic as it explicitly integrates experiencing oneself as connected to all other living humans who are also affected by the pandemic.» weiterlesen» einklappen
