The purpose of this project is the conservation and protection of the allis shad (Alosa alosa) in the Rhine system. This large member of the herring family migrated hundreds of kilometers and was once an important species for the commercial inland fishery. The distribution range of the species has decreased dramatically during the last 100 years. The distribution range of the species has decreased dramatically during the last 100 years. In this unique European project with financial and practical support of three Rhine bordering countries (Netherlands, Germany, France) the project has for main objective the re-introduction of allis shad in the Rhine System. Only 150 years ago hundreds of thousands of allis shad were caught annually in the Rhine System and they were an important economic factor for the local population.
