Modulation of dendritic cells by dietetic substances
Projektbeschreibung: There is strong evidence that the intestinal flora influences the postnatal development of the immune system. Propagation of selected bacterial species by supplementation of infant formula with prebiotics is an effective method to modify the mixed microbiota of bottle-fed infants towards a more “Bifidus” flora, which closely resembles that of breastfed infants.
At present, it is not clear whether the immunomodulatory capacity of prebiotics originates from direct effects on immune cells or whether it depends on indirect effects, mediated by the propagation of selected species of the intestinal microbiota. Dendritic cells as the most potent professional antigen presenting cells play a central role in the activation and differentiation of effector T lymphocytes as well as in the maintenance of peripheral tolerance. In this project we analyze the effects of prebiotics on the activation and maturation of dendritic cells.
