Digital technologies offer companies opportunities to achieve competitive advantages or to respond to market challenges. For digital innovation, it is important to have a solid decision-making basis for or against the adoption of a digital technology. Therefore, companies need the capability to identify and monitor developments in digital technologies as well as in the market environment and incorporate these insights into the innovation process at an early stage. For digital innovation, it is important to have a solid decision-making basis for or against the adoption of a digital technology. Therefore, companies need the capability to identify and monitor developments in digital technologies as well as in the market environment and incorporate these insights into the innovation process at an early stage. Prior research has explored the capabilities that companies need to succeed here. In this paper, previous findings are confirmed and extended by examining in detail the related activities that companies perform in practice.
