John Edgar Wideman's work is set at the boundary of autobiography and metafiction. Over the course of his long career, he not only published highly acclaimed novels and collections of essays, but also experimented with various forms of brevity and types of short narratives that fit within the tradition of what has been called 'short short stories', a type of sort fiction characterized by compression and economy.
