Objectives: The purpose of this study was to determine the incidence of syringomyelia in our patients with scoliosis.
Summary of Backround Data: Coexistence rates of up to 30% of scoliosis and syringomyelia in patients with primary scoliosis have been reported in clinical studies. One author suggests that every patient with primary scoliosis should have an MRI performed.
Methods: 31 patients with different types of scoliosis were examined clinically and with MRI. Only patients with neuromuscular scoliosis were excluded. 26 patients had an idiopathic scoliosis, two patients had a congenital scoliosis, one patient had Osteogenesis imperfecta, Down-Syndrom and McKusick-Kaufman-Syndrom. Respectively 25 female and 6 male patients were included. All MRI’s were evaluated by an experienced Radiologist.
Results: Three patients (9.7%) were diagnosed with a persisting central canal and four others (13%) with syringomyelia. One of these also had a tethered cord in combination with a diplomyelia. A neurosurgical operation with myelolysis and opening of the syringomyelia was performed upon this patient. In one case we saw a Chiari I malformation.
Conclusion: We think that MRI should be performed in cases with any clinical symptoms for syringomyelia. Because of possible arisal of neurological deficits MRI should be performed when a spinal fusion is planned.
