In the present investigation, the cyclic deformation behavior of the railway wheel steel SAE 1050 was investigated in the VHCF regime until 2?10E8 cycles. In constant amplitude tests, the cyclic deformation behavior was characterized on the basis of temperature and electrical resistance measurements. In constant amplitude tests, the cyclic deformation behavior was characterized on the basis of temperature and electrical resistance measurements. The observed crack initiation sites vary from surface defects to subsurface inclusions and microstructural inhomogenities, like phase boundaries between cementite and ferrite. In this case, local differences in the deformability are the reason for crack initiation. The fatigue life calculation method ?PHYBAL? leads to a very good agreement between the S-N curve calculated on the basis of the change in temperature or electrical resistance and the experimentally determined curve.» weiterlesen» einklappen
