An urban population of fire salamanders (Salamandra salamandra) was studied in the Bienhorn valley (Koblenz, Germany) between April and November 2008. Snout-vent length of male salamanders was significantly larger than that of females. Density estimates based on several line transects were 4,220 individuals/ha in the brookside region of the Bienhorn rivulet and 1,220 individuals/ha at the Pfaffendorf cemetery. The local population size at the cemetery (1.4 ha) was about 1,800 individuals. A conservative estimate of the total population size inhabiting the catchment area of the Bienhorn rivulet (186 ha) was at least 20,000 individuals, while the real number was most probably much greater. The conservation status of this urban population was assessed by rating the catchment area of the Bienhorn rivulet with respect to landscape resistance counteracting migrations and local mortality risk. High-risk areas such as streets and footpaths showed usually low migratory resistance. Still, only 20 salamanders were killed in road casualties during the complete study period. Therefore, we do not consider this urban population as vulnerable.» weiterlesen» einklappen
