A system of hydrological, agricultural and socio-economical models "MoNit" is used to analyze the past development of groundwater nitrate pollution of the. Upper Rhine Graben aquifer within an area of approx. 4300 km(2). The input of nitrate to groundwater with recharge from precipitation was simulated using a large scale nitrate balance model. In addition, a process-oriented nitrate model at plot scale was needed to,estimate the effects of remedial actions. In the groundwater transport model denitrification was simulated by analogy to oxygen depletion. The models required some adaption on the particular situation of the study area. The verification of the model system shows a satisfactory agreement especially with groundwater data from repeated surveys. The model system permits a comparative evaluation of different possibilities of action in order to reduce the extent of pollution faster than until now. » weiterlesen» einklappen
