In recent years the measurement of the sonic velocity has become a well-accepted method to monitor the setting kinetic of refractory castables and is already broadly used. However, it remains difficult to understand details of the increase of the sonic velocity as a function of setting time. Supplementary measurements of the electrical conductivity had shown that every increase and decrease of the sonic velocity and electrical conductivity is linked to a mineralogical or physical transformation. This paper will show recent results that assist the interpretation of the evolution of the sonic velocity and electrical conductivity during the first 48 hours. In particular the discrimination of pore water and hydration water by gravimetric methods clearly shows that an increase of the sonic velocity during the first stages of setting cannot be correlated with the initial formation of hydrates. With this new knowledge it still remains an ongoing discussion what the first increase of the sonic velocity stands for with special regard to the setting and strength evolution of refractory castables. However with this recent investigation it turned very clear that the electrical conductivity leads to more reliable results if the time of the hydrate phase formation is the matter of interest.» weiterlesen» einklappen
