The Second Vatican Council understands itself as an ecumenically oriented council. With its pastorally formulated doctrinal texts, it is addressed to the whole Catholic Church, to other Christian churches and communities, as well as to people of other faiths and to non-believers. Through this Council the Catholic Church has modified some important parts of its own theological understanding of Church and World without betraying its enduring tradition. The different charisms of Pope John XXIII and Pope Paul VI have stimulated the renewal of the Church. Even after fifty years the complex appropriation of the changed understanding of the Church in the world is still ongoing. The Council stands and falls with its ecclesiology, which reveals the mystery of God as both an internal and external reality.
