Particular attention is paid to his political radicalisation, his involvement in the revolutionary movements of the 1840s, and his contributions to the development of democratic political culture in Germany. Born in Lüdenscheid, Grün became politically active during his university years, developing an interest in Hegelian philosophy and establishing connections with liberal and radical intellectual circles. His journalistic activities brought him into conflict with the Prussian authorities, ultimately forcing him into exile. As editor of the Mannheimer Abendzeitung, he advocated democratic reforms and supported radical opposition to political repression. Following the suppression of his journalistic activities, he moved to Paris, where his intellectual interests increasingly turned towards the social question and contemporary socialist theories. Grün's encounter with French socialism, particularly the ideas of Pierre-Joseph Proudhon, proved decisive for his intellectual development. His writings contributed to the dissemination of French socialist thought in Germany and brought him into direct intellectual conflict with Karl Marx. Their disagreements reflected fundamental differences concerning the interpretation of socialism, the relationship between philosophy and political practice, and the prospects for social transformation. The article places particular emphasis on Grün's activities in Trier during the revolutionary events of 1848–1849. As editor of the Trier'sche Zeitung and a prominent democratic activist, he combined journalism with direct political engagement. His election to the Prussian National Assembly, his involvement in democratic associations, and his participation in the campaign against the dissolution of the Assembly illustrate the increasingly confrontational relationship between the democratic movement and the Prussian monarchy. His arrest and subsequent trial, which ended in acquittal, marked a turning point in his political career. After the failure of the revolution, Grün emigrated to Belgium. Although he continued to work as a journalist and commentator, his interests gradually shifted towards literary, philosophical, and cultural-historical subjects. His later career illustrates the changing intellectual trajectories of many former revolutionaries following the political defeats of 1848–1849. Finally, the article examines Grün's reception and historiographical legacy. It highlights the extent to which his contributions were overshadowed by his conflict with Marx and demonstrates the significance of his political journalism and revolutionary activities for understanding the intellectual diversity of Germany's early democratic and socialist movements.» weiterlesen» einklappen
