Concept mapping is a learning strategy that fosters meaningful learning. This study (N = 112 students, mean age: 17.20) investigated the benefits of cognitive and/or metacognitive prompts on learning outcomes when learning by concept mapping. Participants who were prompted during concept mapping achieved a significantly better learning outcome. However, mixed prompts were not more beneficial than solely cognitive or metacognitive prompts.
