Especially, extruded HVDC cable systems and their prefabricated accessories are essential for a reliable energy transmission for the next decades. Those insulation systems require a deep understanding of the material behaviour and their interactions to system boundary conditions as temperature and electrical field strength. Especially, due to DC specific effects, detailed investigations in terms of electrical conductivity and space charge behaviour are important. The investigation of apparent DC conductivity of polymeric insulation materials is discussed in wide range of scientific works. However, these investigations focusing on isothermal conditions. Cable systems undergo a wide range of thermal system conditions during development tests, qualifications tests, and system operation specified by conductor temperature and ambient temperature. Based on Maxwell equations, the thermal system conditions determine the material conductivity, and thus, the electrical field distribution of the insulation system. Hence, for development and design of reliable HVDC cable system components, the material characteristics under consideration of dynamic thermal profiles is elementary. Within the scope of this paper, a novel method for investigation of polymeric HVDC insulation materials under consideration of dynamic temperature profiles is described. Apparent DC conductivity measurements with focus on LDPE and XLPE plaque samples under application of thermal heating cycles in adaptation to normative requirements are carried out. The paper describes the overall measuring set-up, evaluation of measuring set-up, and production of test samples. Detailed apparent DC conductivity measurements on different test samples are carried out, and the results are discussed in relation to their functionality in polymeric HVDC insulation systems. Concluding, the paper gives an outlook to ongoing and further studies.» weiterlesen» einklappen
